When it comes to maintenance and protection of your vehicle, oftentimes people will associate additives for only the winter months. While it is important to use additives in the winter months, it is important to maintain that same protection in the hotter summer months. So what are some of the things you need to be considering when it comes to taking care of your diesel fuel in the summer? There are five different areas to think about. Lubricity, water dispersant, fuel stabilization, rust inhibitors, and cetane boost. By using the correct additives, you can take even the worst quality diesel fuel and turn it into a “premium” diesel fuel.
Lubricity is important for fuel systems as their high-dollar components rely on lubrication to maintain efficient performance. If you’re running fuel with low lubricity, you’re risking a failure on said parts. In fact, in a recent shop visit, a CP4 high pressure fuel pump failed because of this exact issue and cost the owner almost $12,000.
Moving on, good water dispersants and rust inhibitors are just as important. If you get water in your fuel system that condensed water in the fuel will cause rust, icing in cold weather, and increase the growth of microorganisms in warm weather. How does water get in there? On these hot summer days, condensation can build up inside and really create problems. By using a good water dispersant or rust inhibitor, you can prevent this.
As for cetane boost, why not get the most out of your fill-up, right?
