How Much Oil Does a 6.7 Cummins Take?
6.7 Cummins Oil Capacity
Commonly found in Dodge Ram trucks, Cummins engines are diesel engines used in heavy-duty vehicles, including construction equipment, buses and trucks. Cummins engines are powerful enough for towing and hauling while still being relatively fuel efficient. They’re also known for being reliable and durable when properly maintained. Regular oil changes ensure that a 6.7 Cummins engine will go the extra mile for you.
How Much Oil Does a 6.7 Cummins Take?
The oil capacity of a 6.7 Cummins varies based on the model year. Engines produced after model year 2010 need 12 quarts of oil, or 3 gallons of oil.
Previous models have different oil capacities, with some older 6.7 Cummins engines having an oil capacity of less than 12 quarts and others requiring more.
The amount of oil your 6.7 Cummins needs can also vary based on whether you change the filter. If you don’t do so, the capacity is approximately 10 quarts. However, it is considered a best practice to change the filter when changing the oil to promote the cleanliness and long-term health of your engine.
Note that while the stated capacity is 12 quarts for post-2010 models, your particular vehicle may need slightly less than the full amount, and you shouldn’t force it just to hit the 12-quart mark. You don’t want to overfill the engine, as too much oil increases pressure and wear and tear on the oil pump and other engine parts.
When choosing an oil for a 6.7 Cummins engine, pay attention to the type as well as the quantity. You want to use the best oil for the engine to make the most of your truck.
6.7 Cummins Oil Change Intervals
6.7 Cummins Oil Change Intervals
The best way to reduce sludge buildup and oil dilution is to change the oil in your 6.7 Cummins engine at the recommended intervals. Oil change intervals vary based on the model year. The ideal interval can also vary based on the conditions you drive in and your driving style.
For 6.7 Cummins engines with a model year between 2007.5 and 2012, the recommended oil change interval is 7,500 miles or every six months, whichever is sooner.
For models after 2013, the recommended interval is every 15,000 miles, six months or 500 hours of use, whichever is sooner.
Generally speaking, if you drive your truck for extended periods without stopping, such as on highways, you can get more miles between oil changes. If you usually travel in city traffic or with a lot of starts and stops, it’s better to change your oil sooner.
Best Oil for a 6.7 Cummins
Best Oil for a 6.7 Cummins
Similarly, the ideal oil for a 6.7 Cummins engine also depends on the model year.
For all models, synthetic oil is recommended over conventional oil. Synthetic oils have a higher flash point than conventional oils, plus additives that promote flow to reduce friction and engine wear. Although full-synthetic oils tend to cost a bit more upfront, they last longer and support greater engine longevity, which translates to long-term savings.
The ideal viscosity grade varies based on the model year and your driving climate. Viscosity grade refers to the temperatures at which the oil operates. You’ll want to choose a viscosity grade based on the ambient temperatures in your area or in the areas where you use the vehicle.
- Model years 2007.5 to 2018: Choose a synthetic 15W-40 oil for temperatures above zero degrees Fahrenheit. For driving in all temperatures, including those below zero, choose a synthetic 5W-40 oil.
- Model years after 2019: Choose a synthetic 10W-30 oil for driving in temperatures above zero degrees Fahrenheit. To drive in all temperatures, including below zero, choose a synthetic 5W-40 oil.
