Traditional DEF does one job: supply urea to the SCR system so it can help reduce NOx emissions. According to the American Petroleum Institute (API), Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) is a 32.5% solution of technically pure urea in purified water, and it is injected into the exhaust stream where heat and catalyst activity convert NOx into nitrogen and water vapor.

That chemistry is essential, but it does not solve one of the biggest real-world problems diesel owners face: crystal buildup.
