I recently purchased a houseboat with twin Caterpillar Diesels and a Westerbeke Deisel Generator. The fuel is about eight years old. Just before winterization last year all three engines “bogged” down and stopped running – UGH – Contaminated fuel I suspect. I changed all filters and water separator elements. I have three 250 gallon tanks. Two of the tanks have been empty for about 12 years and have been filled less than 10 times after being cleaned in 2005. The other tank is the one with the old fuel which could have as much as 125 gallons remaining. Several questions: Will your product work in a marine application where the fuel sits for long periods of time? Not knowing the condition of the fuel or the contaminants in the tank, do I need to empty the old fuel before adding Diesel Extreme? Should the empty tanks be cleaned before putting new fuel in or will the Diesel Extreme be sufficient? How much product should I use per tank. Often should I use it. One note, I’ll be taking the vessel on about a 1,000 mile voyage in a couple of months. Let me thank you in advance for your time and interest.

Mark, our products will work with marine applications, Diesel Extreme would be what I recommend for “waking” up this tank of fuel, and then our Everyday Diesel Treatment is a great fuel stabilizer for when the boat gets put in storage in the future.

While BP and Chevron both agree that diesel fuel has a storage life of 6-12 months, we find that pretty pessimistic. For your eight year old fuel, one of my only reservations is that the tank was only half full which promotes water build up and corrosion in the tank. If you’re able to look into the fuel with a flashlight we can get a sense of the level of fuel degradation and contamination by seeing how dark the fuel is. Diesel Extreme contains the maximum amount of cetane improver, water dispersant, and is backed by a money back guarantee. If we can’t get that fuel to work, let us know and we’ll issue a refund or send more product, just hang on to your receipt. Worst case scenario is you might plug up a few fuel filters throughout the course of this tank, lowered power from the energy content the fuel has lost, more black smoke from exhaust, etc. The key is fresh, high quality filters to prevent damaging lines and injectors. If the engine or generator starts and runs on the fuel I would top off with fresh diesel fuel. It’ll probably be difficult to start with the fuel, and a headache to keep running on it; if you have the means to safely dispose of the old fuel that would be the headache free way to go.

The empty tanks should be good to go with either Diesel Extreme or Everyday Diesel Treatment, if you’re able to visually inspect for corrosion/rust I definitely would recommend doing so.

Two quarts of Diesel Extreme will treat 150 gallons of fuel.

1-2 ounces of Everyday Diesel Treatment will treat 25 gallons of new fuel depending on your desired dose; a 16oz bottle treats 400. I’d put one ounce per 25 gallons if you’re running the fuel soon, two ounces per 25 gallons if you’re storing the fuel.

Thank you for your response Spencer! An update following this seasons first visit to the boat this past weekend: Last fall, in a quandary about how to retrieve and then dispose of the remaining old fuel (about 125 gallons), I remembered being told the furnace also operates on diesel and draws from the same tank as the engines. In hopes of “burning up” the remaining fuel, I left the furnace running for the winter – HURRAY – SUCCESS – the fuel gauge now indicates an empty tank. Question: If there are a few gallons remaining, as I doubt the tank is “bone dry”, do I need to be concerned or will fresh fuel and the Diesel Extreme be sufficient to mitigate any negative effects the small amount of remaining fuel may still have? Is it recommended to run the Diesel Extreme with every tank until seasonal lay-up when I switch to the Everyday Diesel Treatment? Also, one important piece of information I didn’t share in my first post, each of the three 250 gallon tanks are aluminum. Again, thank you!

Nice! Glad we got rid of that fuel easily! Fresh fuel and a dose of the Diesel Extreme will be more than sufficient for diluting the rest of the old fuel.

You’ll see the results and protection you’re desiring by using Diesel Extreme in this initial tank, then follow up doses of 1 ounce per 25 gallons Everyday Diesel Treatment throughout the summer and a 2oz per 25 gallon dose when storing; 16 ounces of EDT will treat 400 gallons of fuel. EDT also has fuel stabilizing properties which make it perfect if you’re storing the fuel for long stretches of time. A dose of Diesel Extreme every spring offers long term benefits to cover you 6 months at a time. EDT focuses on fuel quality while Diesel Extreme is a potent cleaner and fuel booster.

No issues with using our products with aluminum tanks; I like the corrosion resistance of aluminum tanks but once corrosion starts it is hard to stop. Congrats on the purchase and we wish you safe travels!

Kurt, with a 7.3L I’d recommend Stiction Eliminator since it was developed specifically for International and Ford for their 6.0L and 7.3L. Our Diesel Extreme is the crowd favorite and since you only need a dose once every 6 months it’s a pretty easy way to make sure your truck is clean, protected and running strong. A Diesel Duo bundle would be perfect! The money back guarantee is simple; try any Hot Shot’s Secret product in your vehicle, if you’re not 100% satisfied let us know and we mail you a check. If you don’t notice a smoother idle, more power, improved fuel economy, or any other benefit listed on the label or our site we’ll honor the guarantee. Just hang on to your receipt or confirmation email so we don’t have to guess the amount! Limit is two bottles to keep people from abusing our policy, so the Diesel Duo definitely qualifies. Thanks!

Fuel detergents commonly have five elements: rust and corrosion inhibitor, cetane booster, fuel stabilizer, metal de-activator, and detergent and dispersant. Most fuel detergent products on the retail shelf are a “boost now, die later” product. They contain minimal cleaners and maximum boosters so that the driver experiences only a short-term boost. Trying to “boost” a dirty fuel system is ineffective.

Hot Shot’s Secret Diesel Extreme is designed to support a “clean then boost” strategy. Diesel Extreme is unsurpassed in its cleaning power and will cleanse your whole system including cylinders and lines. It will restore your fuel system components to their original cleanliness and prepare them for maximum response when Diesel Extreme’s cetane booster kicks in.

Diesel Extreme is a concentrated cetane improver which also contains a highly effective fuel stability package. It will tremendously upgrade power and performance in all diesel equipment, increase mileage and provide maintenance economy. Storage stability of fuels will be greatly increased and diesel engines will be kept in a much cleaner and maintenance-free condition. In addition, Diesel Extreme has a stabilizing system to improve storage stability that will prevent polymerization and breakdown of hydrocarbons which results in gum and sludge formation. The dispersant prevents insoluble residues from forming, which are sometimes produced when mixing fuels from different sources. Corrosion is prevented by an inhibitor which produces a protective non-deposit-forming film on metal surfaces in the fuel.

Directions:
2 quarts treat 160 gallons of diesel fuel.
1 quart treats 80 gallons of diesel fuel.
16 oz. bottle treats 40 gallons of diesel fuel.

Recommended Frequency:
Use one treatment of Diesel Extreme every 6 months.

Uses:

Diesel Extreme is extremely effective in middle distillate fuels to improve combustion and ignition efficiency, enhance fuel economy and maintain fuel in a clean, stabilized condition. Hot Shot’s Secret Diesel Extreme is safe in all diesel engines: semi-trucks, pick-up trucks, farm equipment and autos. Including but not limited to: Ford Powerstroke, Dodge Cummins, GM Duramax, Saab, Volkswagen, and Audi.

Diesel Extreme will improve cetane in the fuel giving it a smoother, less erratic pressure buildup in the combustion chamber during the ignition delay period, which occurs between injection and ignition. Controlling this pressure buildup eliminates the potential damage to piston rings and rod bearings. Power and fuel economy is increased as fuel burns more evenly and cleanly. Misfiring is controlled. When ignition improves, emissions are reduced and noise levels are lowered. Control of the pressure buildup allows more complete burning of the refractive molecules in the fuel, which steal power and produce deposits and wear. Cetane improvement gives quicker starts and faster warm-up at cold temperatures. Diesel Extreme will lower the minimum starting temperature of a diesel engine approximately 5°F.

Controlling Misfires, Stabilizing the Fuel System, and Improved Engine Performance. The point at which misfiring occurs in a diesel engine is influenced by the temperature of the intake air. Diesel Extreme will lower the temperature at which misfiring occurs by as much as 30°F. The fuel stabilizing system in Diesel Extreme eliminates problems caused by sludge, corrosion, rust or scale in degraded fuels. Sticking fuel injectors and plugged lines and filters are prevented, saving costly fuel and reducing maintenance. Engine performance is improved and wear is reduced when operating with clean, stabilized, sludge-free fuel. Diesel Extreme will not only prevent potential acid and sludge-forming reactions, which cause both corrosive and abrasive wear, but will disperse existing sludge and deposits.
